Our website

riftcustodian.com sets no cookies, runs no analytics or adverts, and loads nothing from other companies: its fonts, images and scripts all come from the site itself.

Like any website, our web host receives your IP address and basic browser details when you visit, so it can deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse. It keeps these server logs only for a short time and we do not use them to identify you. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website.

Playing the game

The game sends nothing about you or your play to us. There are no analytics, adverts or tracking cookies in it.

It saves your settings (graphics quality, sound, difficulty, look sensitivity, field guide) and the secrets you have found in your browser’s local storage, on your own device, so they are there next time. That data stays on your device and you can clear it in your browser settings at any time. Because it only makes the game do what you asked, it does not need consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) or the ePrivacy Directive.

If you play on itch.io, itch.io runs the page around the game and handles its own data under the itch.io privacy policy.

The mailing list

You can join the mailing list on riftcustodian.com, from the game’s title menu (GET GAME UPDATES) or at the end of the demo. Joining is optional and has no effect on the game.

What we collectYour email address. Brevo also records when and from which IP address you signed up and confirmed (our proof of your consent), and whether you open our emails and click their links.
What we use it forEmailing you news about The Rift: Custodian, such as new levels, release dates, playtests and the odd behind-the-scenes note. Open and click records tell us which news people read. We never sell your address or share it for anyone else’s marketing.
Our lawful basisYour consent (Article 6(1)(a) of the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, and regulation 22 of PECR). You give it by ticking the box and confirming by email, and you can withdraw it at any time.
How you sign upDouble opt-in: after you submit the form we email you a confirmation link, and you join the list only when you click it. If you don’t, we won’t email you again.
AgeThe mailing list is for people aged 16 or over. Please don’t sign up if you are younger.
How long we keep itWhile you stay subscribed. When you unsubscribe, Brevo keeps your address on a suppression list so you are never emailed by mistake (our legitimate interest in respecting your choice); ask us and we will erase it completely. Sign-ups that are never confirmed are deleted within six months. If the mailing list closes, we delete it.

The feedback form

The game, this website and our emails link to an optional feedback form. It is a Google Form: it does not ask for your name or email address and you don’t need to sign in. Your answers are stored in our Google account and read only to improve the game; we keep them while they are useful for its development. Please don’t put personal details in the comments box. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in improving the game.

The form is on Google’s own website, so Google handles your visit, including its own cookies and any transfer of data to the United States, under the Google Privacy Policy.

Who handles your data for us

Our emails are sent with Brevo (Sendinblue SAS, 106 boulevard Haussmann, 75008 Paris, France), which stores the mailing list for us as our processor under a data processing agreement. Brevo keeps the data in the European Union, which the UK recognises as giving adequate protection. Where Brevo’s own sub-processors are outside the UK or the European Economic Area, Brevo protects the transfer with standard contractual clauses. See the Brevo privacy policy.

Nobody else receives your data, unless the law requires us to share it.

Your rights

You can ask us at any time to:

To stop receiving emails, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any of them. That withdraws your consent straight away; it does not affect emails we sent before.

For anything else, email [email protected]. We reply within one month and there is no charge.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113) or, in the European Union, to the data protection authority where you live or work. We would appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Decisions about you

We make no automated decisions about you and do not build profiles of you beyond the open and click records above.

Changes to this notice

If we change how we use your data, we will update this page and its date. If the change affects the mailing list, we will tell subscribers by email before it takes effect.
